Indonesien Teil 4: Bali

Vorab…
Dann kommen wir also zum letzten Akt unseres Indonesien-Aufenthalts.
Der Fokus in dieser Zeit lag vor allem auf Yoga und Surfen. Wir konnten richtig schön eintauchen.

Kuta…
Wie um alles in der Welt können Menschen (und noch dazu soviele) ernsthaft hier ihren Jahresurlaub verbringen? Also Bali als ganze Insel gesehen okay, aber warum in oder um Kuta? Hier gibt es alle Nachteile einer Großstadt (Verkehr, Lärm etc.), aber keine nennenswerten Vorteile, außer dass mit dem “billig”…
Hier mal ein kleine Einschätzung -
Auf ca. 50m Straßenabschnitt befinden sich wohl an die 30 Shops und insgesamt sprechen wir von ca. 50km dieser Straßen, was da dann 30.000 Shops wären, die Stoffe, Kleider, Ketten, Krimskrams, Helme, T-Shirts, Surfbretter, Taschen, Möbel, Bikinis, etc. verkaufen. Hinzu kommen gefühlte 30.000 Restaurants bzw. kleinere Imbiss-Stände und 10.000 Massage- und Spa-Möglichkeiten.
Ein Traum dabei ist allerdings das Preisniveau. Für ein 1a-Sushi-Essen zu zweit zahlt man dabei ca. 12 EUR, für eine Stunde Massage ca. 4 EUR, für einen Marken-Bikini oder eine Boardshort ca. 30 EUR, für einen Sarong geht’s ab 20 Cent los…
Der Strandabschnitt in Kuta kann eigentlich auch nicht die Attraktion sein… Obwohl ein sehr schöner Strand mit surfbaren Wellen, der sich über ca. 10km erstreckt, ist dort einfach die Hölle los: Surfcamps, Massen an Touristen, Kiosks und Einheimische, die dir alle 2min was verkaufen, dich massieren oder dich mit von ihnen bereitgestelltem Surfbrett und Lifeguard-Shirt fotografieren wollen. Gleich dahinter, also wirklich ca. 5m hinter dem Strand, herrscht Verkehrschaos… Millionen von Mopeds, Bussen, Taxen, die sich die Strandpromenade entlang schieben. Überhaupt: in jeder noch so kleinen Gasse oder Straße fahren Autos und Mopeds und das in einer unglaublichen Anzahl. Nix mit “in Ruhe die 30.000 Shops abbummeln”, zwischendrin Kaffee trinken oder so… Nein, als Fußgänger muss man echt aufpassen, dass man vor lauter schauen nicht bei den kaputten Gehsteigen stolpert oder von einem Moped niedergebügelt wird.

Bali…
3 mal zwischengestoppt und zu guter Letzt über 10 Tage am Stück ausgeharrt… hier, in der Kuta-Gegend auf Bali, im Wahnsinn! Bei jedem Aufenthalt haben wir uns immer weiter Richtung Norden, immer etwas mehr raus aus dem Zentrum, hochgearbeitet. Anfangs noch mittendrin in Kuta für 8 EUR die Nacht gehaust, dann mal ein paar Tage in “Onkel Tom’s Hütte” in Seminyak (danke Tom!), am Ende dann in einem netten – von Mama gesponserten Haus (danke Mama May!) – in Canggu, was da noch ein Stück weiter die Westküste hoch ist. Und so haben wir Bali trotz seines Wahnsinns mit der Zeit doch lieb gewonnen. Kann man schon aushalten hier… oder sagen wir so – es war eine tolle Zeit und hat richtig Spass gemacht.

First of all…

So, we are at the last part of our Indonesia stay.
The focus in that time was pretty much on yoga and surfing. We could get into it really well.

Kuta…
Why the hell do people spend their annual holiday in that place? Bali overall ok… but why Kuta? There are all disadvantages of a big city (traffic, noise, etc.) and no obvious advantages except that it’s really cheap.
Here a little estimation -
On about 50m street there are about 30 shops. In total those streets are ca. 50km long. That’s around 30.000 shops then. They wanna sell you sarongs, necklaces, helmets, T-shirts, surfboards, bags, furniture, bikinis and everything else you can imagine. Additionally there are 30.000 restaurants and food stalls plus 10.000 possibilities for massage and spa.
But what’s really good is the price level. High-end sushi for 2 people is about 12 EUR, 1 hour massage ca. 4 EUR, a good brand bikini or boardshort around 30 EUR and a sarong starts from ca. 20 cents…
The beach in Kuta cannot be the main attraction… Even it’s a quite nice beach with surfable waves it’s more or less hell: Surfcamps, masses of tourists, locals coming every 2 minutes who wanna sell you something or give you a massage or sell you a photo that they shoot with you and a served surfboard and lifeguard-shirt… horrible. Right behind the beach there is traffic chaos – millions of motorbikes, taxis that just drive along the beach walkway. Well, in every single tiny street there is an unbelievable amount of cars and motor scooters. Nothing with “easy walking along those 30.000 shops”, drinking a coffee and stuff… As a pedestrian you really have to take care not to fall on the fucked up walkways or get caught by one of the crazy motorbike riders…

Bali…
We’ve been here 3 times in total and in the end even stayed here for 10 days in a row… We started with a a night in Kuta – in hell! And with every stay we worked ourselves up north – away from that crazy center. After Kuta we could spend a few days in “Uncle Tom’s hut” in Seminyak (Thanks, Tom!), and then in a very nice house in Canggu that was sponsored by Mum May (Thanks, Mum May!). In the end we even started to really like Bali with all its craziness. Or let’s say… it was a great time and we had a lot of fun!
