Sydney: Welcome back to the Western world!

Die Vorfreude war groß, nach fast 6 Monaten Südostasien zu verlassen und ein ganz neues Kapitel der Reise zu beginnen. Uns war auch bewusst, dass wir den Standard hinsichtlich Unterkunft, Essen und sonstigen Vergnügungen in Australien nicht würden halten können, weil einfach teurer… Daher hatten wir auch diesen tollen Plan, einen kleinen Van zu mieten, uns hauptsächlich von Haferflocken und Bananen zu ernähren und einfach zu versuchen, uns ein wenig runterzuschrauben.

Doch angekommen in Sydney ging alles ganz schnell… Das Taxi nach Bondi Beach hat uns ca. 40 EUR gekostet, die Backpacker Unterkunft (8qm mit Bad am Gang) ebenfalls um die 40 EUR pro Nacht, ein Liter Wasser am Kiosk fast 3 EUR, das erste Mittagessen mit 2 einfachen Sandwiches ca. 20 EUR. Unser geplanter Van war für ca. 60 EUR am Tag zu haben, ohne Benzin natürlich.

Damit können wir niemanden von daheim schockieren, aber uns hat es fast die Tränen in die Augen getrieben… Es macht einfach so gar keinen Spaß, wenn man ein Weltreise-Budget hat, das mit unserem westlichen Preisniveau nicht so ganz zusammenpasst.

Doch nicht nur des Geldes wegen, sondern auch wegen dem “Das is ja hier wie daheim”-Gefühl, also der kulturelle Aspekt, haben wir unsere Pläne für die nächsten 3 Monate innerhalb von 5 Minuten geändert. Und das macht dann richtig Spass… diese Freiheit mal wieder ganz direkt zu fühlen!
In Sydney eine Woche, dann direkt weiter nach Neuseeland. Da es dort auch nur minimal billiger ist, wollen wir dort nur ca. 3 Wochen verbringen (anstatt der geplanten 2 bis 3 Monate), bevor es gleich weiter nach Mittelamerika geht.

Damit sind wir nun unglaublicherweise ganz nah dran an unserem ursprünglichen Zeitplan… und das Gefül der Vorfreude ist auch schon wieder da!

Trotzdem muss man den Tagen in Sydney viel Positives abgewinnen: Wir haben Nic und Kathrin wieder getroffen, Nico und Vanessa besucht, unser Surfbrett-Setup komplett erneuert, ein paar wärmere Klamotten erstanden und Bondi Beach “ab-flaniert”. Coole Stadt, keine Frage, aber Geld verdienen wär in unserer Situation essentiel, um das auch wirklich alles geniessen zu können.

We were really looking forward to start a new chapter of our trip in Australia, after almost 6 months in South East Asia. We knew that we wouldn’t be able to keep our standard of travelling concerning accomodation, food and other pleasures because it’s just more expensive… That’s why we already had the plan to rent a van, go on a little roadtrip up the East Coast and live from oatmeal and bananas – just to limit ourselves a little bit!

But after arriving in Sydney it all went pretty quick… The taxi from the airport to Bondi Beach was about 40 EUR, the hostel room (8sqm, shared bathroom) also about 40 EUR per night, one litre of drinking water almost 3 EUR, the first lunch (2 very simple sandwiches) about 20 EUR. Our van would have been over 60 EUR a day (without gas of course).

With these prices we cannot shock anybody at home, but we almost were about to cry whenever we stood at a cash desk… It’s just no fun when the daily budget of our trip and the reality are so far from each other.

But it was not only the money which made us change our plans within 5min. Also this strange feeling “that’s like at home”, i.d. the cultural aspects, contributed to that decision. And that is big fun again: a radical change of plans… to feel this freedom we have so directly…
Now, we have one week in Sydney, then straight to New Zealand. As it won’t be much cheaper over there, we also cut this down to 3 weeks (originally 2 or 3 months), before we gonna head to Central America.

And now – we can’t believe – we are pretty close to our original travel plans!

Still, the time im Sydney was great: meet up again with Nic and Kathrin, visit Nico and Vanessa, upgrade our surfboard setup, buy some warm clothes in second hand shops and stroll along Bondi Beach… Cool city, no doubt, but earning money would be essentiel for us to really enjoy staying here!
