Nach den Osterfeiertagen in den Cities schnell wieder an den Strand… Das war perfektes Timing, da die mexikanischen Urlaubsmassen sich dann schon wieder zurückgezogen haben, und wir den Strand fast für uns ganz allein hatten – abgesehen von den Amerikanern, die sich aber meistens in den dicken Luxushotels versteckt haben.

Von Nexpa über Sayulita und in das benachbarte San Francisco, zusammen mit Domo und Lena – das war ein perfekter Strandurlaub mit vielen Geschichten von Innsbruck und seinen Leuten, welche uns Stück für Stück der Heimat näher gebracht haben.
Dann noch weiter gen Norden, mit Frida auf die Brummi-Fähre nach Baja California und die letzten 5 Tage Mexico in und um Todos Santos… Frida wurde zum Besitzer Carsten zurückgebracht und wir hatten dort dank der großen Gastfreundschaft noch eine super Zeit mit letzten Wellen für Holger, einem unglaublich putzigen Hund (Shiba), einer überraschend großstädtischen Party (in dem 5000 Einwohner Dorf) und sehr lieben Menschen.

Danke, liebe Frida, du hast uns ohne Probleme von Costa Rica bis nach Mexico gebracht und uns einen perfekten Roadtrip geschenkt, ein wirkliches Highlight unserer 12 Monate!

After Semana Santa back to the beach… perfect timing as the Mexican tourists were already on their way back. So we had the beach almost just to ourselves – besides the few US people but they mostly were hidden in luxury resorts.

From Nexpa to Sayulita and its lovely neighbour village San Francisco, together with Domo and Lena – that was perfect beach holiday with many stories from Innsbruck and its people which gave us a very positive feeling for returning back home.
A bit more north we entered with Frida the truck ferry to Baja California where we spent our last 5 days in Mexico in and around Todos Santos… We returned Frida to its owner Carsten and had because of his nice hospitality a great time with final waves for Holger, an incredible nice young dog Shiba, a surprising party with “big city feeling” (in a village of 5000 people) and very nice people. Thank you!

Thank you also, dear Frida, you brought us without problems from Costa Rica to Mexico and gave us a perfect roadtrip, a real highlight of our trip!

Roadtrippin’ … 6 Nächte Nicaragua, 1 Nacht Honduras, 11 Nächte El Salvador!

Nicaragua hat uns durch seine Ursprünglichkeit (v.a. im Vergleich zu Costa Rica), durch seine guten Wellen und den außerordentlich guten Rum Flor de Cana überrascht und erfreut. Aufgrund seiner Geschichte (Revolution Ende der 70er/ 80er) ist die Amerikanisierung hier noch nicht ganz so weit fortgeschritten und das gefällt: Deutlich weniger Fastfood-Ketten, weniger riesen SUVs (dafür noch mehr Pferde) und beschwerlichere Anfahrten zu den Surfspots, aber schließlich jede Anstrengung wert. Hier kann man sehr gut ein weiteres Mal vorbeischauen…

Honduras war für uns reine Transit-Strecke. Da wir aber nicht 2 Grenzübergänge an einem Tag machen wollten, haben wir eine Nacht Zwischenstopp eingelegt – in der südlichen Ecke des Landes, die für Touristen eigentlich nichts zu bieten hat außer Trockenheit, Hitze und Armut. Hier haben wir es erneut von allen Richtungen eingeprügelt bekommen, wie extrem gut es uns geht (und damit sind nicht nur wir Langzeiturlauber gemeint).

Speziell waren dort außerdem die Polizeikontrollen, in denen wir uns alle 10 bis 20km wiedergefunden haben. Ausgestattet mit 2 Warndreiecken, 2 Ersatzreifen und einem Feuerlöscher (vielen, vielen Dank an dieser Stelle an die Frida-Vorbesitzer Nic und Kathrin) und dank des guten Smalltalk-Themas Fußball-WM (ja, Honduras hat sich qualifiziert) haben wir fast alle problemlos hinter uns gebracht… Die letzte Kontrolle hat uns aber dann doch ein paar Dollar gekostet – wegen fehlender Seitenreflektoren!

“We fly to El Salvador, we don’t know why and we don’t know what for…” – der Song von Athlete hat es uns lange vorgesungen und die Vorfreude auf dieses Land, von dem wir vorher kaum was wussten, war groß – die Überraschung umso größer…

Das Land ist viel moderner, viel reicher und viel fortschrittlicher als wir uns das vorgestellt haben. Gleich nach dem Grenzübergang ein riesen Burger King, perfekt ausgebaute Straßen die komplette Küste entlang, sehr viele super hippe Resorts und Restaurants und ein entsprechendes Preisniveau… Nach kurzer Eingewöhnungsphase bzw. Anpassung der Erwartungen haben wir uns aber extrem wohl gefühlt, nette Menschen kennengelernt und die Nähe zum Meer an der Costa de Balsamo in El Zonte sehr genossen (noch näher nämlich:  Zimmer-Meer ca. 40m). Neben den Philippinen war das einer der wenigen Orte, wo sich Einheimische und Touristen richtig gut vermischt haben. Auch definitiv ein Platzerl zum Wiederkommen…

Jetzt kommt noch Guatemala und Mexico und dann ist nach einem letzten Stopp in New York Ende April das Jahr auch schon wieder rum… 8 Wochen Countdown!!! Uns geht der Arsch auf Grundeis…

Roadtrippin’… 6 nights in Nicaragua, 1 night in Honduras, 11 nights in El Salvador!

Nicaragua is a very nice and original country with awesome waves and a terrific rum “Flor de Cana”. Because of its history with the revolution in the 70ies and 80ies it was not supported by the USA during this time – what you can see now and what is actually pretty nice: less fast food chaines, less SUVs on the road (but more horses), worse conditions of the roads and longer drives to the surfspots. Yes, would be nice to come back here one day…

Honduras was just transit for us. As we didn’t want to do 2 border crossings in one day, we stopped for a night in a small town in the south of the country which has more or less nothing for tourists but heat, dryness and poverty. Here we got hit again how f… lucky we are (and not only us, the longterm holiday makers).

Also worth mentioning in Honduras are the police control points which you find every 10 to 20km. Equipped with everything imaginable the policemen could ask for (thx again to Nic and Kathrin) and some small talk about the upcoming football worldchampionship (yes, Honduras is qualified) we almost managed all of them without bigger problems… just at the last one before getting to El Salvador we had to pay… because of missing reflectors on Frida’s side doors!

“We fly to El Salvador, we don’t know why and we don’t know what for…” this song by Athlete stuck in our ears for ages and made us pretty curious about this country we didn’t know much about before – and it was a big surprise!!! This country is much more developped, much more modern and progressive than we thought. A huge Burger King in the small village right after the border, perfect new roads along the coast, hip and expensive hotels and restaurants and a adjusted price level… after a day of re-adjusting our expections we started liking it there… a lot! We had a nice place to stay, got to know very good people and enjoyed the fact of being so close to the ocean in El Zonte/ Costa Balsamo (yes, even closer, about 40m from our room).

Besides the Philippines, El Salvador was one of the rare places where western tourists and locals/ El Salvadorians mixed in a perfect way… Also a spot where we definitely would like to come back.

Next country (more for the transit) is Guatemala and then Mexico before we come back home after a last stop in New York (end of April). 8 weeks countdown… and we are getting a bit nervous…

Diese Stelle muss auch noch einmal für ein ganz RIESIGES Dankeschön genutzt werden… an Kathrin und Nic! Das Hinterlassen der Frida inkl. Matratze, Töpfen, Taschen usw. ist einfach meeeega und gibt unseren letzten Monaten der Reise eine unglaubliche Flexibilität und Freiheit (falls wir von der noch nicht genug haben). Vor allem der Surfbrett Transport gestaltet sich plötzlich als ein Kinderspiel. Danke, ihr beiden, fein waren die 3 Tage mit euch im Auto (einmal zur Nicaragua-Grenze und zurück), wünschen euch nun alles Gute für das Einleben zuhause…

Auch wenn wir uns gerade etwas festgesessen haben in Matapalo (Süden Costa Ricas), so bringt uns Frida jetzt schon 2x die Woche ins Dorf zum Shoppen und schnell zum Krankenhaus, falls uns mal ein Surfbrett am Schädel trifft…

Aber ein bisschen Schonung darf’s noch geben, schließlich steht bald der Trip Richtung Mexiko auf dem Plan!

After some problems in the beginning, we are in Costa Rica now – since almost 3 weeks and on the road with our new – expanded – family…

We would like to say once more a BIG BIG thank you to Kathrin and Nic for letting us Frida including matraces, cooking stuff etc. This van makes the rest of our trip even more flexible and gives us even more freedom (just in case we still don’t have enough). Thanks, you two, we had a great time with you in those 3 days (driving up to the Nicarguan boarder and back). We wish you all the best for the home coming!

Even if we are now kind of stuck in Matapalo (Southern Costa Rica), Frida takes us to the village for Shoping twice a week and gets us in time to the hospital when we got hit by a surfboard.

But some more relaxation is good before we start the long way up to Mexico…
